Magic was definitely in the air last Tuesday when London went positively emerald to celebrate 10 years of Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.
The milestone was celebrated with a gala performance by the current ’10th Anniversary Cast’. Wicked is the 18th longest running show in West End History, opening on 27th September 2006. The show has played over 4000 performances in the same theatre and to date it has won nine WhatsOnStage Awards, two Olivier Audience Awards and an Evening Standard Theatre Award.
MTAS took our seats in the theatre with high expectations and it’s safe to say this 10th anniversary cast do not disappoint. Rachel Tucker returns to the West End fresh from a run on Broadway and has raw power in her voice which sends shivers down your spine at every opportunity. Her ability to add little riffs and rhythmically breathe fresh air into the songs is on another level. Add to this Suzie Mathers as Glinda who has unending energy and yet is vulnerable when she needs to be. Her version of ‘Popular‘ is now my favourite in 9 times of seeing the show. They contrast and compliment each other beautifully in both the comic ‘What Is This Feeling‘ and also in the moving ‘For Good‘.
