Fresh out of smash hit Half A Sixpence and before rehearsals for Dick Whittington have even began, the news is already out about Charlie Stemp’s newest role. And it’s a big one. He’s heading to the bright lights of Broadway to make his American debut alongside Bernadette Peters in the critically acclaimed Hello Dolly! The west ends new favourite song and dance man will be taking in the role of Barnaby Tucker and I am sure that he will take to it like a duck to water and that Broadway will fall in love with him, just as many London Theatre fans have.
What a couple of years this young performer has had. When he walked into that room to audition to be part of the chorus for Half A Sixpence, no one knew what an incredible star was about to be born and what an incredible career was in front of him. With his title staring role in Dick Whittington at the London Palladium still to come, alongside Sixpence co-star Emma Williams, it’s been a whirlwind for this young performer. One role after another and I am sure that this will only continue for many years to come.
For a performer of Charlie’s triple threat talents, the chance to perform on Broadway was always in the pipeline but I don’t think many thought that it would happen this soon. As a super fan of his and of sixpence, I couldn’t be happier for him or feel more proud. And whilst the thought (or call it a dream) of visiting Broadway one day myself lingers in my mind, I fear a phobia of even the thought of planes and being so far from home will stop me, but to quote Arthur Kipps himself ‘can’t be helped’. Theatre fans in America are very lucky to be getting the chance to see this incredible performer on Broadway, still so early in what I am sure will be a very long career. And I, for one, am extremely jealous that so many will get to see him over there.
From my experience, I know Half A Sixpence fans are very very dedicated. Will this news lead to them jetting off to the states to see Charlie on the Broadway stage? It really would not surprise me if it does. He sure has a very strong fan base. And for those fans that can not make the journey all the way to America, I know that whilst I am sure that Broadway will welcome Charlie with open home, i hope that London will one day be ready to welcome him back with more amazing roles for this shining star of the stage!
I am sure that everyone here wishes all the luck in the world to Charlie Stemp, I am sure that he is going to be absolutely amazing in this big exciting new role.
What do you think of this new role for London’s newest stage star?
