Rolling into his 1st year anniversary on the West End DreamGirls provides its fans with fantastic news! The show is set to continue, extending its booking up until 2nd June 2018, along with this also is a new ‘dream’ filled casting!
DreamGirls was a Broadway musical that opened in 1981, with music by Henry Kriger, and Lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. Set in the turbulent early 1960s to mid-70s, the story follows Effie, Deena and Lorrell, who have formed a promising girl group called ‘The Dreamettes’. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor Jr., who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: becoming the back-up singers for headliner James “Thunder” Early. It isn’t long before Curtis gradually takes control of the girls’ look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as ‘The Dreams’. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Although the Dreams become a crossover phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.
Now the most recent actress in the role of Effie was Glee star Amber Riley, she will now sadly play her last performance on November 18th. Following in her footsteps are 3 talented ladies, who for sure are going to be amazing! Marisa Wallace, Karen Mav, will continue as Effie and are now joined by Moya Angela.
Marisha Wallace, well known to the MTAS clan is an established Broadway star. She first joined the London Dreamgirls cast earlier this year, having played the part with rave reviews in the Dallas Theater Center Production.
Karen Mav, has been wowing audiences in Dreamgirls since she made her professional stage debut in the London production last year. Having climbed to fame on ‘The X Factor’ and releasing an original Christmas single in 2015, she will continue spreading her amazing vocals as Effie.
Newcomer Moya Angela is an electric vocalist, and musical theatre actress from the US, again she played the role of Effie in the North American Revival tour of Dreamgirls. She was also a quarterfinalist in the 2016 series of ‘America’s Got Talent.’
The trio will share the main role together throughout the week – currently which nights the actresses will play has yet to be announced. But due to being one of the biggest sing in musical theatre history, producer Sonia Friedman says this is why they have cast three amazing vocalist to play the iconic role. Ensuring the actresses look after their voices, but each night the audience will experience Goosebumps and tingles when they hear the amazing soundtrack to this show.
